Monkey See, Monkey Do

We've all seen the videos of chimpanzees or other apes in the wild, where a Mama Monkey will use a tool then the Baby Monkey will try the same.

Imagine that video with Deven & me as the Monkeys, just wearing clothes & slightly less hairy:

This morning, deven wanted to eat some 'pishtas' (Hindi for pistacio) - but he was stymied by the nuts with shells that weren't opened enough.

I took the spoon from our cereal breakfast, and used it as a tool to wedge in the slightly-opened shell and open the nut. Deven happily gobbled the nut down, then within seconds, he used the spoon in the same way.

I know I shouldn't have been surprised, but I still was by level his manual dexterity. And as any good mother, I immediately thought his new skill was proof of his brilliance, enough to get a full scholarship to UPenn or Stanford. :)

Rohan, meanwhile, is taking after cousin Ante and standing up a lot - already enjoying a table Deven got for his first birthday. Spells trouble ahead, for sure!

When they're good...

...They're very, very good.

And when they're sleeping, they're better!

Our Muffin & Cupcake, sacked out on a warm & sunny Saturday afternoon in San Francisco.

Happy Birthday, Uncle Tommy!

Deven the Bul-bul-bee

Today was Deven's first day at Holy Family Day Home preschool. He's in a class called the Bumblebees, or as he says it, the Bul-bul-bees.

After a bit of drama at home (he slept poorly last night and fussed this morning before leaving), he seems to be enjoying himself at school - it's me who's having the emotions.

I'm feeling:
- twinges of bittersweet sadness (my sweet little baby boy is growing up SO fast!)
- nervousness (will he be happy here? A good boy? Nice to other kids?)
- pride (wow, he's a lot less aggressive than that wild-child...but I'm trying to curb this emotion because Deven can be just as horrid)
- fear (is he safe here? Will that wild-child there hurt him when the teachers aren't watching? Will he get sick? And omigosh...after loving this school for all the right reasons, did we make the right decision?!?)

Breathe...I guess only time will tell.

Bye-bye Cedar Lake

Bye-bye Auntie Heather,
Bye-bye Uncle Tommy,
Bye-bye Cousin Ante,
Bye-bye Uncle Paulie, Tetee Bridgett, Cousins Emily & Eden, Baca & Didi, & Uncle Leland.

We have to go back to San Francisco now. We had a GREAT time in Chicago & Cedar Lake! We miss you already, and can't wait to see you again soon!
Love,
Katie, Yogesh, Deven, Rohan, & Daadi

Images from Cedar Lake, part 4

On our last full day @ Cedar Lake, Rohan started eating Auntie Heather's sarong, pulling himself up on my pant leg, and the boys had a nice evening on the dock & boat & water, despite the cool/wet weather earlier. :)

More photos of the littlest cousins on the porch together, and of dinner - with images of cousins Emily & Eden (partially hidden) as well.

Fun times!

Images from Cedar Lake, Part 2

Just some more snaps of the cousins on the sunporch together...

Images from Cedar Lake

The weather hasn't cooperated with us the past 2 days, but I laugh as I type that, because I realize that I had gotten used to the California never-rain-in-summer weather.

Uncle Tommy's brother Paul, Bridgett (sp?) & family joined us Wed. Today we had a nice walk to the local DQ with their girls Emily & Eden, then a nice boat ride in the late afternoon to see the other (less windy) side of the lake-followed by a nice dinner courtesy of Titi (Aunt in Croatian) Bridgett.

We jumped into the water near the Pacific Heights-homes of Cedar Lake (Heather & Tommy live more on the Mission-side), where Deven & Rohan continued in character - Deven with his vocal fear of the water & Rohan slept thru it all.

Swimming in the deep, I was reminded of a nice memory I have from childhood; that of visiting my Great Uncle Edwin and swimming in Lake George, NY when he took us out & anchored his boat in the middle of the lake. I could even still 'feel' the squishy bottom of Lake George in my memory. I hope our boys can have memories something like that as they grow up.

Like a Sandbox in the Water

Deven has always been somewhat fearful if water. In the shower, he covers his face & cries when water pours on his head; he didn't like pools/swimming classes, and doesn't like to go in new water, even in a floatee, at all.
Rohan, like cousin Ante, is very different - they love the water; sit & giggle in floatees, and generally have a good time.

When we got here Monday, Yogesh convinced Deven to go into the shallow water on his own by holding him and slowly lowering down (as he whimpered) until Deven's feet touched bottom.

By yesterday, this was the scene - Deven refused to wear anything over his Birthday Suit; and had a grand time with Daddy in the lake.

We knew Deven was finally comfortable standing on his own when he calmly told us "It's like a sandbox in the water!"

Stepper-upper

Rohan has learned to go up a step! Here he is, quite proud of himself and smiling @ Auntie Heather, after crawling up the 1 step from the lower sundeck to the covered porch.
Call me biased, but I'd say he's going to be a ladies man!

Dinner @ Chez Uncle Tommy's

With seasoned pork chops, sweet Indiana corn on the cob, a fresh garden salad and all the trimmings - Uncle Tommy & Aunt Heather made a feast fit for a king! Or at least for hungry boys & their parents & grandparents. Last night was the perfect-sunset kind of dinner; enough to make your mouth water, even when you're not hungry.

Fun on the jetski

Uncle Tommy taught Yogesh how to ride the jetski this afternoon - and once again, I think we've created a monster!
He was slow and steady this time out, but came back with an ear-to-ear grin so I expect more mischief to come this week.

Happiness is Daadi's lap & Doodh-Dooh

@ Cedar Lake

Fun on the sundeck

The lake is warm, the sun is shady, and Mom & Dad are still getting ready...so we're just 3 cousins, having fun on the sundeck waiting for them!

Sleepin' in in Chicago

Rohan & Daddy are still on Pacific time (unlike Deven, who refuses to sleep when he hears ANYONE else up).
Looks like Rohan & Daddy agree that the guest bed in Ante's room @ Auntie Heather & Uncle Tommy house is comfy!

Fun with Cousin Ante

Deven, Rohan, and Ante have all become fast friends and partners in crime.

Ante is teaching Rohan how to stand up, Rohan is teaching Ante how to crawl. Deven is teaching both how to be a Marauder.

Here are the youngest grandkids of Grandpa Doug & Grandma Gerda, being bandits on the back porch in Chicago. See Daadi's leg @ right (in blue)- she likes the heat & humidity. Yay for warm-weather vacations!

What's wrong w/this picture?

If you'd been reading lately, you know I hate pumping. Well, I hate wasting (anything) more than I hate pumping.

This photo shows a bag of small milk-bottles, full. 2 days worth of expressed milk for Rohan.

So what?

What's wrong is what you can't see: that after carefully pumping, storing, and lugging home these bottles, I LEFT THIS BAG IN MY BRIEFCASE OVERNIGHT, spoiling ~ 20 oz of precious 'white gold' inside.

Sigh.

(In other news, Happy Anniversary to Naani & Grandpa - and many happy returns of the day!)

Summer has set in

with its usual severity.

With a bow to the original author, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, I would say this weekend was the embodiment of that statement.

Saturday, we entertained a new Nanny candidate at home (more to that story, but back to the main point); then we went to Aunt Danielle's house for a yummy brunch & fun in her sunny backyard (photos of us, then of Danielle & Peter, then Danielle & the cutest 8-month old in my world); followed by toilet-shopping @ the local plumbing supply store (yep, we're gonna do it - we're gonna have that 2nd bathroom put in!); a trip to Rainbow Grocery - the uber-hippy-all-organic-and-sustainable-Co-op-so-socially-conscious-they-don't-even-sell-meat-and-Daadi-loves-it-because-she-gets-10%-off grocery store; the Park; and home again to go to bed before everyone had a meltdown.

SEEKING NEW NANNY
We love our current Nanny. However, she's pregnant, so we are off again full-tilt into the wilds of Craigslist and GGMG mailing list resources to find another Mary Poppins. This time is a lot different from mid-2007 when we were searching the first time:

- I / we know MUCH more about what we want & need, and
- The economy has put LOTS of good candidates on the street, taking the candidates' bargaining powers away.

I don't want to sound like a harda$$, but we are good employers: We pay full-time, legally (only 25% of parents in the Bay area do!), a good wage, vacations, sick time, holidays, even full public-transport fare, so we aren't willing to suffer fools. We think we've found a kind, gentle new gal to replace our current beloved nanny - so fingers crossed that things work out with her.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Today, we visited Aunt Carolyn, who was in town with friends of hers Connie & Reddy in Los Altos - they have a pool, so we spent a charming afternoon outside in the heat and then having yummy "California Cuisine" dinner on their back patio.

Deven practiced Aunt Carolyn's name on the way down, so by the time we got there he was saying "Aunt Caaaareen"... and by the time we left, he was able to say "Bye Aunt Car-o-lyn" (this was after we'd turned the corner after leaving of course...but that's what we have learned to expect from our little Deven).

We went into the pool straightaway, Rohan with giggles and Deven with his usual skepticism about the whole water-thing...until I did a cannonball off the diving board, that is. Then he screamed with delight and wanted me to do it again (sorry kid, it hurt!).
While we were splashing in the pool, Reddy commented how much both boys look like Uncle Helly. I agreed - some of you may recall that I was very excited to opine on the idea that Deven looked like Uncle Helly back in late 2007 - and it's nice to know someone else who knew Uncle Helly thinks both Deven & Rohan look like him, today. :)

At dinner, I had fun getting to (re)tell just a bit of the story of Uncle Helly's life. And we thought of Uncle Helly again, when we were talking about the bread we were eating. See, in the Sherwood-Sharma family, Yogesh likes the nose/heel of the bread & I like the small-inside pieces, so all is well. However in Aunt Carolyn & Uncle Helly's family, they were always fighting over who would get to eat the nose because everyone liked it. So, while Aunt Carolyn was slicing more bread, I commented that Uncle Helly was looking down on us and smiling. She smiled wistfully, and said he was likely not smiling, but drooling. :) I think we all missed him terribly at that moment.

Driving back to San Francisco, as we left the warm 80-degree late-afternoon of Los Altos and came back to the cool 65-degree evening of the City, we realized how lucky we are to live where we do. While Daadi and I sometimes want more sun, we really can't complain about summer here in Northern California...when it's sunny!

I. Hate. Pumping...

...but I love nursing. I may've already complained about this, but given that Rohan will be 8 months old on Friday (wow! 8 months? Already? Wow! ...now back to main point), I figured I'd mention again how much I loathe the mechanical sucker.

But I do love breastfeeding. Did I say that already? I love nursing! I do!
I was only able to breastfeed Deven for ~ 9 months, then my loathing of the pump and a tough time @ work got the best of me with him. He started wanting more milk, more quickly, than I could accommodate and I just gave up. He was fine. But I missed the closeness.

So, here I sit with Rohan almost 8 months old, eating anything we put in front of him, edible or otherwise - that includes dried flowers (oops), pieces of random candy wrappers (oops - Deven!), and anything else he can now crawl to faster than we can get it away from him. And, as one consequence, he's taking less milk. He's healthy as far as we can tell - and that's wonderful.

I pump once per day @ the office...I should do it twice, but - as the post topic suggests - I hate it. And I'm lucky enough to have all the necessary "gear"
- two (2) pumps - one stays @ the office, one (secondhand used) @ home - and don't let anyone tell you a used pump isn't good enough b/c so long as the darned thing sucks, it's fine...
- Convenient hands-free "Easy Expression Hands-Free Breast Pumping Bra" (the ultra-sexy thing (NOT!) that makes all nursing moms cringe...but frankly, is completely useful)

(is this photo of the "bustier" ridiculous or what?!?
- 3 sets of "horns" (what we call breastshields) - so I can have 1 @ home, 1 dirty @ home, & 1 in the office
- TONS of small Medela bottles - about 50, I think. I bought a nursing wrap (which I never used) and the gal who sold that to me, gave me tons of these little bottles, which is great.
- Quite a few small sterile plastic baggies; just in case I run out of bottles.

Anyway, I really do want to nurse Rohan for at least 1 year (which all the docs say is the right amount of time); I just wish there were a way to do so without the evil pump.

In other news, we're excited to see Aunt Carolyn, who'll be coming into town to visit old friends this weekend. Deven and Daadi have never met her, so I hope he's willing to eat and nap before he meets her - I admit I want him to be the Charming Prince Deven when she meets him, not the Little Devil Deven.

Then next weekend, we're off to vacation with Aunt Heather, Uncle Tommy, & cousin Ante for a week @ their vacation home in Cedar Lake, Indiana. Wish us luck there, to be well-behaved guests for the week! :)

Crawling

Uh-oh, Rohan has definitely started crawling properly this weekend...the photo may not prove it, but he's also doing a lot of downward-dog (think yoga pose) and squirming/wiggling. Deven may have the hardest time of all; as now he can't just steal Baby Brother's toys without a fight.

We are about to embark on a 6-8 week bathroom remodel (wish us luck), and as part of that we're cleaning out stuff we don't need. We sorted thru Rohan's clothes &, in addition to the newborn-3 mos stuff we'd already given away, we sorted out the 6 mos items. Our wonderful nanny is herself pregnant, so we will give her all the clothes.

Without getting too teary-eyed, I was able to put in a bag to give away:
- the adorable blue-green "My Aunt Loves Me" onesie
- Lots of other froggie-stuff from Aunt Heather
- the blue-white striped train-engineer overall & cap outfit
- the hand-me-down items from Sarah Daly-pretty much too used/stained to give back now
- the other teeny stuff I remember opening @ Deven's baby shower, and marveling @ the size and wondering what experiences we were going to face.
We will keep just a few items - the sweater Daadi knitted; the outfit of name-brand khakis with ducks on them & belt, button-down-shirt, and argyle socks; and hats - the 2 yellow-white ones that Aunt Carolyn knitted, and the blue hat with ear flaps & handy neck-tie from Aunt Anne. We still have- and are using- the knitted baby blankets, and will keep those, just like my mom kept a few outfits for Heather & me.

But our boys are growing up, and giving away the clothes are just one reminder!
