Mama sho' can cook!

While the chefs are away, the novice shall...not starve!

I made a stir-fry tofu, green beans & broccoli in tomato sauce (started by browning fresh garlic & spices in olive oil); & a kale, romaine, kiwi & persimmon smoothie. That plus a beer & candle - yum!

Looking forward to seeing my babies again soon. :)

Happy 3rd birthday baby

Rohan turns 3 today, 1/2 a world away. I miss him, and Deven, and Daddy (Yogesh) and Daadi.

He's in Chandigharh visiting Auntie Kiran & Uncle OP with the whole gang. I hear that there will be a nice party there; sure wish I could be there.

Baby, I love you. From the minute you were born, you've been my sweet little Rohan. Hard to say how you'll turn out, but "well" is what I'm working for.

Photos are of my baby soon after his birthday; as well as the stocking and lights I've hung at home (despite the family!)

Talking to India

Via Skype works fairly well - image is of the home screen while I'm talking... though the video portion cuts out with some regularity.

I have enjoyed my time at home and yet I miss my boyz - Wednesday is Rohan's 3rd birthday, and he'll celebrate it literally 1/2 a world away.

I love you, Rohan, Deven, Yogesh (& Daadaji & Daadiji too of course).

Don't pity me

Because I'm a late-30's woman alone on a Friday night in my pj's by 9pm, sitting on my couch with wine & bon-bons (thanks to John & Tash for those...dangerous stuff!)

I cannot remember the last time the house was this clean, the weather was this still (gorgeous not too cold outside) and I was this calm.

The quiet is deafening - I can hear the blood rush behind my ears, the clock, the cars outside, & Mr. Sparky's nails on the wood floor.

Of course I miss my boys, and of course I have work to do - but this is kind of nice, so I'm just going to enjoy it!

Old friends visit!

John Gonano & his wife Tash visited us  - what a wonderful time! I haven't seen him in 12 years & it was just wonderful to meet again. Photo of Aunt Danielle with Uncle John & Aunt Tash.
They run a grassfed beef farm & whitewater outfitter in West Virginia:

Let's not make it 12 more years until we meet again.

Bye-Bye Tsering (sniff)

We said goodbye to our beloved Nanny Tsering earlier this week. Rohan will be going off to school after we return from India - he'll be 3, and he's really ready for school.

It's hard to say goodbye to someone who has loved your children every day, all day, for over 2 years. (And let me not go too deeply into it, but as a person, Tsering is a calm, sweet, loving woman who is efficient with households as well, so she not only kept us picked up and in order physically, but mentally & emotionally too).

Tears were shed; it was a bittersweet moment. She will still care for our sharecare partner, "Baby Desmond" who's now 1 year old; so we hope to see her again on occasion for babysitting.

In related news, we're going through the public school search process - saw our "Neighborhood school" (which we have only a slim chance of getting a seat at); so that, plus we're on the eve-eve now of Yogesh's 40th year - it should be an interesting year of transitions for us. :)

Wholly Cow! Rascals enjoy a pre-dinner treat

Our boys were treated to some of Clover Stornetta's finest this
evening at the local Noe Valley Whole Foods.

They enjoyed the chocolate milk so much, all that was left by the time
we got to the checkout was their chocolate milk mustaches. :)

Another great Halloween on Fair Oaks Street!

Happy ghoulish night from Batman, Robin, little friend the bumblebee Desmond and all the ghosts on a perfect night in San Francisco!

Diwali Party!

We had fun today with the SF Desi Baby group, who put on a lovely
Diwali Party today, complete with food, sweets, dancers, readings &
music.

The boys were enthralled with the traditional Indian Odissi classical
dancing & the tabla player - Rohan was dancing along while Deven
characteristically hung back.

4 year old logic

Is awesome. A recent exchange:
Grandpa Doug: "Did you fly direct from San Francisco?"
Deven: "No, the plane circled around to land."

:)

Walking to school to see Deven

San Francisco is charming this time of year- so Rohan & Daddy went walking to HFDH to get Deven today as thy have before.

Note the stick in Rohan's hand - he & Deven both love to play with sticks, twigs & any manner of leaves, stones, and other similar stuff they find while walking. Fun!

35 years later...

...Rohan is wearing a sweater with a hood that Naani Gerda made for me (mommy).
I think he looks cuter!

Great Auntie Kathleen

Visited us & brought some great books- we had a ton of fun together, even seeing the great Ravi Shankar in concert.
There really isn't much better than reading in bed together!

Thanks, Tsering & Daadi

As I prepare for another business trip, this piece really struck me. Thanks, Tsering (our current wonderful nanny), Sangye (our former wonderful nanny), and all the great nannies, Grandmas, Daadis, babysitters, teachers, and Ones Who Love My Kids! You've kept me sane. :)
Her 'thanks' comes about 1/2 way thru her speech:

I found it here:

Master Godiva

Legend has it that Lady Godiva rode thru town on a white steed in just
her birthday suit; Rohan followed suit (just his birthday suit, that
is) on a colorful trike.
Which, in San Francisco, is a completely normal, everyday occurrence.

Today Rohan said sweetly 'Mommy, i love you.' to which i smiled &
kissed & hugged him.
Then he touched my forehead & said 'Mommy, you have train tracks on
your forehead.'
This kid needs to learn to quit while he's ahead! :)

Mommy, I love you more than...

Chocolate ice cream with sprinkles, and astronauts.
Deven has been saying this & things like it lately. Rohan has followed suit.

I love you too, Deven & Rohan.

First Ride

Deven got his first set o' wheels today - the skuut bike is now Rohan's & Deven has this shiny new red bicycle.

His first ride was a bit rough- I had forgotten how hard it is to ride, & of course his first block was a San Francisco hill. Once we got on the flat (& with a full cup o' hot chocolate in his belly) he gained confidence & even started having fun going a little bit faster.

I foresee a new era of going to the Farmers Market together on the weekends...the main problem we now have is- where do we store the bike?
:)

Auntie Heather's new stroller

With seating for 3 (yes, Ante gets to sit up higher above his baby brother & sister- hard to tell in this photo) & pockets galore, this stroller is Auntie Heather's new favorite thing to take a walk with her family. Glad we got it for her!
More photos coming soon...

Boyz in Tahoe 5: Soccer Golf

On the beach, I hear this was a popular game until the crowds precluded further 'golfing' with the soccer ball!

Boyz in Tahoe 4

The boyz visited the classic car rally that was going on in Tahoe before heading home, after a week of daily beach visits (complete with underwater swimming in freezing Tahoe lakewater), eating whatever they could convince Daddy to give them, and generally rascallyness whenever it was just Daady & Daadi.

They left Tahoe today, so tired that the rascals slept most of the way home.

Here in Chicago, I have helped Heather & Tommy with a few night feedings; tonight Heather's even sleeping in her own bed while I'm on the couch w 'lil Lex & Lily in bassinets nearby.
Fingers crossed...At least someone should sleep well tonight!

I'm leaving tomorrow for a conference, so it's the least I can do.

Photos of these little ones coming soon. They're adorable, smell that sweet newborn smell, Lex coos the way Rohan used to (Heather calls it his 'giggle'), and they remind me that I'm thrilled & happy w the 2 rascals we already have. :)

Boyz in Tahoe 3

Having fun in a kayak - wow I miss my rascals!

Boyz in Tahoe 2

Having fun in freezing cold water, but they didn't mind!

Boyz in Tahoe

Having fun
I was working this week & now @ Heather's, but I hear it was magical. Home now but excited to go back again soon!

Cousins @ 8 days old

Here's Cousins Alex & Lily, at 8 days old. I hear all's well in Chicago, & I'm looking forward to meeting them soon!

...and the names are...

Heather & Tommy's new babies have named themselves:

Lily Reid Starcevic (Reid is my, Deven's, and Grandpa Doug's middle name; and my great-grandmother's maiden name)

and

Alexander Douglas Starcevic (Douglas is Grandpa Doug's name, of course :)

I might still call Lily "Robin" because I know Mama Heather likes it, and I do, too. :) All's well in Chicago; Heather goes home with the babies today.

Same photo as before...

Starcevic Twins!

Heather & Tommy's twins - the first photos. Still no names confirmed, but Mama Heather & babies are doing well. Girl is so small she won't fit into any of the clothing Heather has for her.

Big Brother Ante has visited, and held his baby sister very tenderly, I hear.
First individual shot is of Girl; second (whole body) is Boy. Enjoy!

Happy birthday to Daadi AND...

...? And ?!

Auntie Heather is in labor now with her twins, which will be precisely 76 years younger than Daadi when they come tomorrow (c-section). Wow!

UPDATE:
Heather & Tommy's boy twin arrived 1:55 AM and the daughter arrived 1:57 AM July 8, 2011. The son is 6 lbs 2 oz and the daughter is 4 lbs 7 oz. Big brother Ante and Daddy are doing fine. The Twins have not chosen their names yet. :)

You have kids

Yogesh took the boys to the restroom this evening after dinner, & I
had a rare 5 minutes alone in the car. I looked at the rear floormat &
saw this, so figured I'd dump it out in the time I had (bits are
mostly a ground-up ricecake).

A lady was walking by & said the subject line to me with a smile -
'Yes' I said, & she grinned & said 'well, hopefully the birds come.'

Yep. They'll eat well here.

Mommy needs this car

Mommy is in the solar industry.
Mommy has a long commute.
Mommy's Prius stickers (that let her drive in the commuter lanes) just expired.
This car is all electric - thus can still go in the commuter lanes.
Mommy needs this car, doesn't she?
;-)

Fun at the (Windy) Beach

We had a great weekend and, despite the wind, had a ton of fun at the
Marina Beach both days. Daddy had a nice Father's Day - and now the
boys can't wait to get back into their swim trunks every day for
swimming lessons!

We did forget water and food and other things - would've been better
if we'd consulted this list first... check it out (and add more!) :)

Auntie Marsha, Gina, & Livia

They came to say happy birthday to Auntie Heather, who's 33 today!

Are always better!
In this case, cousin Ante's awesome motorbike rocker. :)

3 generations... Almost

Grandad Doug came today & we are looking forward to a fun weekend! :)

3 rascally cousins

We walked together to the store - the rascals were ...rascally. &
teaching their cousin how to do the same. Lucky Heather. :)

Sleeping Buddies

Ain't they cute?

From Scardey-Cats to Ducklings

Today was the last swimming class, but in very un-San Francisco
fashion, it was pouring in June.

That didn't stop our Ducklings from *begging* to go swimming. We had
bought goggles last week, & they were practicing wearing them all
week, so how could we say no?

They were the only kids in the class so they had a 'private lesson'
which they LOVED. Thanks, teacher Karla, for helping our Ducklings
gain such a love of the water!

I Did It!

...and with that, the first weekend of Rohan's potty training is
coming to an end, and we have proof that he will, in fact, *not* go to
college without being potty trained.

We have not been adamant about the topic, though we are roughly
following the 3-day potty training method. We've had lots of accidents
(particularly out of the house- he has yet to use a potty other than
his own little blue one) but we have simply removed his diaper & he's
gone 'commando' outside (as in this photo) and completely pantless at
home...
Thus were rewarded this evening, after dinner & some liquids, when we
watched with breathless anticipation as he walked on his own to the
bathroom with his hand on his crotch & a concerned look in his eye. He
came out shouting the title of this post, and ran into my arms with a
grin - and I was thrilled to reward him with cheers, kisses, & a big
hug.
Ye!
