Fun at the pool, finally

We've signed up for swim lessons at the Brisbane Community Pool, in the town where Aunt Danielle & Uncle Peter just moved.

We showed up early for our first class today, remembering the panicked shrieks from Deven when we last has him in lessons (prior to Rohan's arrival) in an indoor pool in San Francisco.

This time was much different, and better, for a few reasons:

1. The pool - outdoor, warm solar-heated water, Goldilocks (not too big/not too small, just right), clean, with a walk-in 0- water level for handicapped access that's also great for fearful little ones, and at this time of day, not too crowded but with a fun adult water aerobics class going on concurrently, so the boys could see Other People - Big People, bouncing and having fun in the water.

2. The weather- while a little bit windy, it was sunny and the pool protected from the big winds. Pools should be outdoors!

3. The other kids - as it turns out, one of Deven's classmates, Catherine, & her little brother Ryan, take lessons here at the same time (she's already in a more-advanced class).

4. The boys- properly outfitted with swimsuits & swim shirts (though as we learned, goggles could be useful); & more importantly, mature enough to not howl the entire time.

To the contrary, after we got Rohan in his swimsuit - at first he was quite reticent - but as you can see, once he realized where the water was shallow, he became our little sunfish. He was in water up to his neck & I was more worried than he was (see him facing the camera here).

Deven, for his part, did well in class & both boys grinned, laughed, & splashed nicely the entire time (see him watching the teacher along with other kids here).

Yay!

What will be their 99 Luftballons?

When I was a girl, my best friend was Danielle (she still is - just now better known as Aunt Danielle to our boys). She is bilingual in German and English, and loved the song "99 Red Balloons" or "99 Luftballons" - I'm sure in part because she understood the lyrics in both languages. I have memories of her giggling and dancing around excitedly when the German version came on the radio - she could sing the whole verses, while I was limited to just "99 Luftballons."

The German 99 Luftballons:

Our boys are growing up bilingual in Hindi and English, and despite Yogesh's concern that Deven speaks "Hinglish" and Rohan sometimes screams "No Hindi!" when Yogesh reads books in Hindi, we want them to know both languages and feel comfortable conversing in either language, in either culture.

The English 99 Red Balloons:

I wonder what song or music will be Deven and Rohan's equivalent of 99 Luftballons?

Fun in Buena Vista Park

We've never been to The Randall Museum, so decided to go today. We got a late start, so en route, we stopped at Buena Vista Park - a place we've never been before as a family.

It's fairly vertical, and quite quiet & green, with fallen-down trees & dirty area to play. Said another way, it's perfect for a 2 & 4 year old.
Digging in the sandy ground, throwing rocks, breaking sticks...Fun!

Sharecare Switch

Rohan's sweet little share-care partner, Layney, moved with her family to Kentucky. While we are happy to have new share-care partner, baby Desmond (5 mos) join us soon, we will miss Layney and her great family a lot. Rohan hasn't really figured it out yet, that Layney isn't coming back - and being that he's now only 2, I wonder if / when he will ask.

She called Rohan "LaLa" and kissed both boys profusely until the minute she left - so I wonder how they'll feel when they meet again in ~ 15 years as we're thinking about college for each of them? :)

It's April 16, 2011 - I have a pile of work bigger than Mt. Diablo, a great husband who's out celebrating a friend's going-away, an older son who's 4 and I think just said "Damn!" (in a bad way), a younger son who's 2 and still sounds like he's talking with marbles in his mouth (though he has a pretty big vocabulary), a MIL who still cooks me dinner (wow), and hobbies I don't get to spend enough time on. I'm pretty darned lucky. And tired.

Fun Up High

Rohan was having fun atop Grandpa Doug's shoulders today!

We're going to miss having Naani & Grandpa here.

Happy Birthday Naani

After a wonderful birthday party for Deven, we celebrated Naani's
birthday this evening. The cake, the gifts, and most importantly, the
family company today, were wonderful!

City Living

No sooner had I put the boys down for a slightly-late afternoon nap, than this ruckus started on the sidewalk ~30 feet below.

If you can't tell, that's a man with a jackhammer & his sidekick banging the chunks of concrete (both earning union overtime wages I'm sure) tearing up the sidewalk, God knows why, right next to our home.

I tell Deven to go sleep in Daadi's room, & 5 minutes later, I find him sneaking a ginger cookie under the covers in her room. Of course he hadn't had lunch earlier, so I - mean Mommy that I am, took it away & made him lie down. In hindsight I should've checked the room & asked where he got it so I could find the stash...but I'm tired, too.

At least Yogesh is happy because India won the Cricket World Cup today. :)
